An East Patchogue teenager was found fatally shot outside his home early Tuesday morning, police say.
The victim was identified as Emilio Sanchez. His father, Jose Sanchez, told News 12 through an interpreter that he was supposed to start a summer job with him at a factory in Shirley Tuesday. He also said that Sanchez was entering his senior year at Bellport High School.
Sanchez says he believes MS-13 was behind the shooting.
"Around here, there's a lot of [MS-13 gang members], the atmosphere is filled with it,” says Sanchez.
Ana Benavides, a neighbor, says she heard what she believed to be fireworks at around 11 p.m. She then quickly realized it was gunfire.
"It was four gunshots,” she said. “I asked my husband if he heard the same thing and he said ‘yes’ but we weren't going to risk ourselves going outside."
Emilio's friend told News 12 that he witnessed the alleged attack. He said that he watched the victim get shot in the back by “one person.”
So far, no arrests have been made.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
