Some neighbors in East New York say they're fed up with trash piling up near their homes - and they want to know why nothing is being done about it.

"It's very annoying," said Jamelia Skyers. "You don't want to see garbage where you live."

Skyers said it's not uncommon to see the sidewalk in front of a nearby empty lot on Flatlands Avenue full of trash.

"People think that it's some place to dump and drop off garbage. It's not really being controlled," she said.

Neighbors said sometimes the trash is so bad, the stench in the area is unbearable.

"You can smell it through your car, even if your windows are up," said Shania Taylor. "Absolutely gross."

A spokesperson for the Department of Sanitation said they're looking into the issue but confirmed whoever owns the property is legally responsible to keep the sidewalks clean and not doing so can result in fines.
