East Moriches residents rejected Long Island?s biggest school tax hike Tuesday.
Superintendent Dr. Charles Russo said voter turnout more than doubled from last year as more than 1,500 cast their vote for or against the proposed 33.5 percent increase. Russo says a contingency budget will be devastating for the district and will force schools to cut music and sports programs. He says extra curricular activities will also be reduced and no new supplies or equipment will be ordered.
Russo says taxes will still increase 22 percent if the district is forced on a contingency budget.
