An East Meadow family is grieving after a 14-year-old boy drowned in a Georgia lake over the holiday weekend.Officials say 14-year-old Dagoberta Mejia drowned while he was fishing with friends in Lake Lanier. Although he was initially up to his knees in water, investigators say he stepped into a deeper part of the lake and disappeared.
According to officials, it took crews more than an hour to find Mejia's body. He was with his family on a vacation for the Fourth of July holiday.Peggy Kaplan, a member of the East Meadow School Board, says Mejia was a good student and was well-liked. She says he played soccer and helped his father who worked at the Colony Diner. He graduated last week from Woodland Middle School. Funeral arrangements are being made in Georgia. Kaplan says the school district will likely hold a memorial to honor Mejia.
