An East Meadow street was renamed Saturday in honor of a firefighter who died nearly 46 years ago.
Park Avenue will now forever be known as Ex-Captain James Landrigan Avenue.
Landrigan served as the captain for the East Meadow Fire Station No. 2 in 1970. He died in the line of duty after suffering a massive heart attack in 1977 at 49 while participating in a training exercise with his fellow firefighters.
Stories of his bravery and heroism live on to this day.
"During the construction of the Nassau County Medical Center, a fire broke out with propane tanks. Someone needed to go in and shut them off. And that person was ex-Captain James Landrigan," said Frank Ciaccio, of the East Meadow Fire Department.
The newly renamed street is in front of East Meadow Fire Station No. 2.
