An East Meadow high school freshman and his mother claim his school is failing when it comes to federal and state law compliance.John Cave, who is hearing-impaired, says he needs his service dog by his side. He says it's the one thing that keeps him safe and secure. Without it, he says he wouldn't hear a smoke alarm or if there was a fire truck headed to the school.Cave and his mother, Nancy, say officials at W. Tresper Clarke High School have barred him from bringing the dog to class. Nancy Cave says both federal and state law states, without exception, that the dog should be allowed public access to all areas including the school. The family says it is prepared to go to federal court to get the decision reversed.Officials at the school would not comment on the case.
