An East Meadow father and son were arraigned today on grand larceny charges for allegedly trying to scam a lottery winner out of his million-dollar jackpot.
Investigators say a lottery winner who went to cash in at Peninsula Deli and Grocery in Hempstead was told by the clerk, Karim Jaghab, that he had won only $1,000.
The 34-year-old victim, who does not speak English, then became suspicious. Authorities say Jaghab told the victim that he would pay him $10,000 as long as he did not involve the police.
Police say store owner, Nabil Jaghab, 57, who was present at the time, confirmed his son's account and told the victim he had only won $10,000. The victim became doubtful about the defendant's claims and called the police.
The 34-year-old lottery winner hit the $1 million jackpot on a $10 Unwrap the Cash scratch-off ticket.
Officials say any lottery win over $600 must be cashed in at the New York State Lottery Office, not the place of purchase.
Both father and son pleaded not guilty to grand larceny charges. They are being held on $7,500 bail each.
