Some East End bus riders claim there are too few buses running between East Hampton and Orient Point, leading to passengers being stranded in potentially dangerous situations.
Southampton Mayor Mark Epley says there are not enough seats to accommodate the increasing ridership and immigrant worker population. The mayor says people who rely on public transportation, like elderly residents and those on fixed incomes, are also inconvenienced. Epley wants more S-92 buses, which runs between East Hampton and Orient Point, added to serve the East End?s growing immigrant population.
Bob Shinnick, who manages bus transit for Suffolk County, says the S-92 was expanded two years ago to accommodate more than 360,000 riders annually. An upcoming study will evaluate whether another expansion is needed.
