A Levittown man who pleaded guilty to charges related to an early 2006 motorcycle crash in Massapequa that killed his wife received a light sentence Wednesday, Nassau County Assistant District Attorney Maureen McCormick said.
David Steinman pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in connection with the crash. Steinman's wife, Amy, was thrown off the back of her husband's 1972 Harley Davidson after it crashed into a car on Sunrise Highway.
The district attorney's office initially recommended 1 to 3 years in prison and the seizure of Steinman's motorcycle. The victim's family, who supported Steinman until Wednesday's hearing, was livid when Steinman said in court that he didn't want his bike taken away.
"Where's the remorse? No remorse," said the victim's mother, Leslie Gonzalez. "My daughter is road kill. My grandson has no mother; he's an only child. And [Steinman] wants his motorcycle back."
Because of Steinman's 13-year-old son, Gonzalez and other relatives nonetheless requested a lesser sentence.
"Victim input is always a part of District Attorney Rice's commitment to this community; to take the crime seriously, but the victims more seriously," McCormick said.
Steinman was sentenced to six months behind bars and five years probation. A Breathalyzer interlock device and a GPS transmitter will be installed in his car as part of his probation.
Richard Librett, Steiman's attorney, said his client does not want the motorcycle back.
