Starting Tuesday, people caught driving drunk in Nassau County will have their faces and names plastered across a newspaper.
"By publicizing people's names, it's going to shame people into changing their behavior and other people are going to be afraid of being shamed like that," says Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi.
While some Long Islanders are in favor of the new punishment, others believe it's too harsh. "Once or twice, you know, it's a mistake," says Julia Rodriguez, of Freeport. "People learn on their own. There's no need for public humiliation."
Nassau County police hope drivers will just avoid the practice altogether. "Drive sober, that's what we want," says Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. "There are plenty of options out there: designated drivers, taxi cabs, mass transportation."
Officers set up extra patrols during Memorial Day weekend to catch drunken drivers. They made sure to set up a checkpoint on the LIE in Plainview, where Officer Kenneth Baribault was hit by an alleged drunken driver last weekend. He remains severely injured in the hospital.
Nassau police will release the number of drunken driving arrests Tuesday, May 27 at a news conference.
