Controversy surrounded Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi Friday over the overtime expenses of police officers protecting him during his gubernatorial run.
Leg. Lisanne Altman (D-Great Neck) is calling for a hearing to examine how much the Suozzi campaign should have paid for his security detail. Suozzi administration officials say the police department made the decision to protect the executive at both county and campaign functions. They say the campaign, therefore, should not be responsible for the overtime costs, which amounted to either $27,000 or $52,000, depending on who is asked. With potential hearings discussing the use of county cars and services looming, the Suozzi campaign has already reimbursed the Nassau County Police Department more than $50,000.
Leg. Peter Schmitt (R-Minority Leader) questions why the Suozzi campaign was originally asked to be accountable for only 10 percent of the costs. Meanwhile, Altman has labeled the budding scandal as "Driving Mr. Suozzi."
