One person is dead and another is charged with DWI following a crash in Commack involving a car filled with young people.
Police say the driver, 22-year-old Steven Mirabal, of Mastic, was drunk when his car slammed into a utility pole Indian Head Road. The front seat passenger, 22-year-old Jeffrey Tavares, of Bellport, was killed. Three teenage girls sitting in the back of the car were hurt. One 14-year-old had to be airlifted to the hospital.
Commack Fire Chief Mike Hertz, who was one of the first on the scene, says along with alcohol, the car was going too fast for the 40 mph stretch of road. Rescuers say the crash scene was so horrific and the car so badly damaged it took more than 20 minutes to get all the people out of the vehicle.
