A New Jersey man was arrested Monday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run that killed an NYPD officer from Valley Stream.
William Espinal-Mejia, 35, turned himself in to authorities and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The off-duty NYPD officer who was struck, 25-year-old Vincent Harrison, had exited a vehicle that was involved in a crash around 3 a.m. Sunday on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Police say a third vehicle then struck Harrison, who had exited his vehicle on the shoulder. The driver of the third car, an Infiniti, briefly stopped at the scene before taking off, according to police.
Harrison was assigned to the 100th Precinct in Queens. There was black and purple bunting hung outside the precinct Monday in his honor.
Harrison's family was too distraught to speak on camera, but released a statement saying, "Vince was a young man and had so much of his life to live. He was very passionate and expressive in the things he felt. One of the things that everyone will remember about him is his infectious smile and laugh."
