Fire departments from all across New York and Long Island are sounding the alarm for volunteers this weekend.
Departments have made it clear that just because of the pandemic, calls have not gone down, and they're looking for help.
Open houses will be happening across the Island this weekend.
"Across Long Island, firefighting is done all by a volunteer basis," says Syosset Fire Department Chief Peter Silver. "Here in Syosset, we have about 30,000 people living in the community cover 19 square miles ... the fire service is provided in its entirety by 110 members."
Silver stressed that their members come from tons of different backgrounds and professions. He said simply they are looking for people who are 18 and over, relatively fit and are ready to serve their community.
"The ability to give to people in their time of need is the greatest gift that we can give," says Silver.
While some open houses are being held in-person, others are being held virtually. In Nassau, other departments taking part include East Meadow, Malverne, Williston Park, Manhasset, South Hempstead, Oceanside, Bellerose, Point Lookout, Great Neck, Freeport, Levittown and Rockville Centre.
In Suffolk, participants include Setauket, Sayville, Bridgehampton, Medford, Greenport, Greenlawn, Islip, Yaphank, Stony Brook, East Quogue, Patchogue, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Middle Island, Mastic Beach and Halesite.

In Syosset, Silver says attendees can expect to hear from members, see some of their equipment and learn about what it takes to be a firefighter.
