Dozens of students and staff members at an Amityville school have fallen ill due to a mysterious illness.The outbreak occurred Thursday afternoon at the Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Those who became sick reported having various flu-like symptoms. Three more people went home sick Friday.Although some students had speculated that food poisoning may be the cause of the symptoms, Suffolk County Health Commissioner Humayun J. Chaudhry says he has ruled out any type of food-borne illness. Chaudhry also says he has also ruled out MRSA and meningitis.
According to Chaudhry, the sickness appears to be some type of upper respiratory ailment like strep. He says he'll have a clearer picture once test results come back Monday.In the meantime, school officials have sanitized the entire buidling.
