Police say 33-year-old Dorient Reid damaged numerous vehicles by removing more than 35 catalytic converters from June 2013 to Feb. 24.
They say catalytic converters are easy to steal and contain platinum and rhodium. Those two metals are worth $1,400 per pound in scrap metal yards.
According to Nassau County police, Reid is responsible for converter thefts in Rockville Centre earlier this month. They believe he also stole nine catalytic converters last week from vehicles owned by AHRC, a nonprofit organization that transports disabled individuals in Nassau County.
Reid faces multiple auto stripping and grand larceny charges. He was arraigned Sunday.
