Donations are down and need is up for organizations who feed the hungry over the holidays.

Pastor Jim Ryan says the Lighthouse Mission is in desperate need with Thanksgiving two weeks away.

"We're expecting to be able to give out 1,600 Thanksgiving meals over the next few weeks," he says. "As of right now, we have 49 chickens and turkeys."

Volunteers at food banks and outreach programs like this one say they are seeing a drop in donations while also seeing an uptick in demand. Food stamps have been cut by about 5 percent, but Long Island Cares' Paul Pachter says it's enough to affect people on fixed incomes.

"It's having a tremendous impact," says Pachter. "Not only on families who may be economically disadvantaged, but also people with disabilities and a lot of senior citizens are struggling right now."
