Doctors say they have created a super-antibiotic that is supposed to battle infections already resistant to common medications.
One concern hovering over the medical community these days is what happens when bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics. In an age where antibiotic-resistant or so-called superbugs can infect vulnerable patients in hospitals and medical facilities, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute may have found a solution, and it's not entirely new.
Dr. Bettina Fries leads the infectious disease division at Stony Brook University Hospital. She says scientists have essentially recharged vancomycin, a drug more than 60 years old.
Scientists believe the new, modified version of the antibiotic may be able to combat superbugs in various ways.
The research still has a long way to go, as it has not yet been tested on animals or humans.
