A Setauket cardiologist pleaded guilty Thursday to felony manslaughter charges stemming from a drunken crash that killed a Middle Island mom last year.

Dr. Thomas Stavola, 54, admitted to running a red light at East Main Street and Route 111 in Smithtown before crashing into Monica Peterman as she headed to work at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. He then fled the scene.

Peterman later died at St. Catherine's, where she worked as a dialysis assistant for 18 years. She was the mother of three children.

"She always gave of herself and never asked for anything in return. That's just who she was," said Russell Peterman, the victim's husband.

Stavola's plea deal includes five years on parole after serving two years in prison. He will remain free on bail until he's sentenced in January.
