Those who got a flu shot and think they are immune to the bug may soon be thinking twice.
Doctors say this year, the flu vaccine may not protect everyone from the illness.
?There are at least two strains that are commonly seen now that would not have been covered by the flu shot,? says Dr. Kenneth Steier, of Nassau University Medical Center.
According to Steier, the two strains, Brisbane and Yamagata, showed up too late to be included in this year?s vaccine. Doctors say that makes this year?s shot only about 50 percent effective.
NUMC doctors say the more recent strains are more aggressive than the ones in recent years. Symptoms include higher fevers and more vomiting. The sickness also lasts longer.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the two strains will be included in next year?s vaccine.
