The Northport Village Board is considering changing a parking policy after a handicapped woman received a ticket for parking in a metered spot.
Robyn Bellospirito, of Huntington Station, has a hard time walking due to health issues. She says she relies on her handicapped parking permit.
She says she spends a lot of time in the Village of Northport where handicapped parking spots are few and far between.
Bellospirito says she started parking at metered spots without feeding the meter. Instead, she put her handicapped tag on her rearview mirror. She says she has been doing the same in Huntington for years without receiving a ticket.
But two weeks ago, she got a $20 parking ticket, which she paid immediately. Bellospirito decided to then speak out to the village board.
“It's an issue that's important to me personally, but I think it would affect a lot of people,” she said.
It was not immediately clear when the board would reach a decision.
