Demands for improvements on Route 202 in Somers

Drivers say the biggest problem are the potholes.

Demands continue for improvements on a busy state road in Somers.

The road at the center of it all is Route 202.

"It's horrendous, it's terrible," says Charlene Barbagallo, who frequently drives on it.

Drivers say the biggest problem are the potholes.

"You hit a lot of stuff, the potholes are there," says Rich Monetti, another frequent driver in that area.

Neighbors say it especially gets bad on the stretch near Lake Road.

Nick DeVito knows about this all too well. He's the superintendent for the Somers Highway Department.

"We field more calls in my office about state road conditions than we do about anything else," DeVito tells News 12.

In fact, we talked with him nearly two years ago about these problems.

He says not much has changed since, despite significant efforts to get the state to fix the road.

“It's just the same thing over and over again, they keep patching them. The patches keep popping during the freeze and thaw cycle. It's unfortunate our residents have to deal with this on a daily basis," says DeVito.

DeVito says a lot more needs to be done.

He's not the only one who has been pushing for action.

"It is in deplorable condition. We've been working in a bipartisan fashion to get the state to allocate the dollars needed to fully repave that road to make it safe," says Assemblyman Matt Slater.

News 12 reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation about any potential plans for improvements in the near future.

It sent News 12 the following statement:

"The safety of the traveling public is always our top priority. NYSDOT maintenance crews work aggressively to address potholes as they develop, including those along State Route 202."
