A Uniondale man's words fired up a judge Monday during sentencing for a deadly case of road rage.
Nassau County Court Judge Meryl Berkowitz told Patrick DeJean, "you are the most despicable kind of human being," who has "no strength of character to say I'm wrong, I'm sorry."
DeJean was convicted of second-degree manslaughter for killing 24-year-old Igor Kruk. Prosecutors said DeJean drove his Honda Accord and ran Kruk, who was riding a motorcycle, into a parked car in Hempstead in September 2005.
During the hearing, DeJean maintained the incident was an accident, a sentiment that set off Berkowitz. Joseph LoPiccolo, DeJean's lawyer, said the five-to-15-year sentence is too long. Meanwhile, in a pre-sentencing statement, Kruk's mother declared her life a wreck since the death of her only son.
