The state sent a letter to Northrop-Grumman last week warning the company to speed up the cleanup process of a toxic plume at the former plant in Bethpage or be prepared to pay a hefty price.
Massapequa Water District Superintendent Stan Carey says it's a step in the right direction.
"It puts them up against the wall to finally take a more aggressive position and properly clean up this groundwater plume that's been plaguing everybody for many years," he says.
In the letter, the Department of Environmental Conservation 'demands' that Grumman respond within 14 days.
A Grumman official sent Newsday a statement saying, in part, that they 'received the letter and are reviewing the details.'
