Town and state officials say they have been given the green light by the Department of Environmental Conservation to rebuild Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood bigger and better than before, now that contaminants have been removed.

The park has been shut down for more than two years following an illegal dumping scandal that ended in felony convictions for Thomas Datre Jr. and Christopher Grabe.

In March, Datre Jr. pleaded guilty to dumping construction debris filled with toxic chemicals at four sites, including Roberto Clemente Park.

Several others were also charged in this case.

Assemblyman Phil Ramos announced Friday that he secured $2 million to include a spray park at the location.

Town officials say they are also planning to include new soccer fields, basketball courts and picnic areas at a cost that will not come from the taxpayers.

Islip town has filed a federal lawsuit against Datre and Grabe and more than a dozen others for the cost of the cleanup.

Thomas Datre Jr.'s attorney tells News 12 his client has already pledged to help remediate and restore the park. He also says the town's lawsuit is overreaching and unnecessary.
