Dozens of day laborers are homeless Tuesday after being kicked out of their tents in Farmingville woods.
Brookhaven Town officials say they received complaints of litter and fires in the woods. When law enforcement officials investigated the area, they found signs of people living in the woods. ?No trespassing? signs were posted and town officials say when the area was investigated again, all of the tents and litter were removed.
The issue of illegal immigrants is nothing new in Farmingville. Approximately a year ago, the town shut down a two-family home that housed about 42 day laborers. As a result of losing their home, those immigrants set up tents on the home?s front lawn. Officials say the town shut down that tent city as well.
Brookhaven Town officials say they are currently working on a long-term solution to living situations for day laborers.
