This Father’s Day has a whole new meaning for a Suffolk dad and the daughter who gave him the gift of life.

Steven Frey says he is lucky to be alive. The 59-year-old has suffered from Crohn’s disease for years. He was told by doctors last year that his liver was failing and he needed a transplant.

Due to his rare blood type, secondary illness and the fact he was lower on the transplant list, Frey was faced with the possibility that he might not get a liver from a deceased donor in time – leaving his only option to get a live donor.

His daughter Marielle, 29, turned out to be a perfect match – though Steven was hesitant to go through with it.

“I didn’t want anything to happen to my daughter,” he says. “I accepted what was happening to me but I didn’t want anything to happen to her.”

Marielle convinced her dad to go through with the transplant and donated 70 percent of her liver. The two have had a long road to recovery, but Marielle says she didn’t think twice about it.

“We are really lucky,” she says. “We are lucky that I was a match.”
