The Double Dutch Holiday Classic is returning to Apollo Theater for its 31st year on Sunday and students at Ms. K’s Dance Academy in Crown Heights have been hard at work preparing.
Coach Kyaisha Max-Mccarthy, better known as Coach K, opened her studio on Park Place in March 2020, just days before the pandemic began to shut many businesses down.
More than two years later, her studio now offers all kinds of dance classes including double dutch.
Her students, the Swagga Jumpers, have been practicing their jump roping for hours on end and motivating each other for the Holiday Classic. However, Coach K says it not about taking home a title but rather the impact they have on each other.
The Swagga Jumpers have earned the titles of state and world champions over the years.
The Holiday Classic is set to start Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Apollo Theatre.
After that, the team will head to the Turkey Bowl in New Jersey.
