The parents of a 4-year-old who was killed in 1990 were in court in Riverhead Thursday and both are now charged with second-degree murder in her death.
Police say Jennifer Shafiq's body was dumped near the LIE in Manorville in 1990 but wasn't discovered until six years later. Prosecutors say the mother, Khairual Abdul, has admitted to causing the injuries that led to Jennifer?s death. They say the father, Parmjit Singh, has admitted to burying the child and witnessing the murder. However, defense attorneys for the pair say they are blaming each other for their daughter?s death.
Both Abdul and Singh pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges with depraved indifference at their arraignment. Originally, Singh was only charged with hindering a prosecution. Both are being held without bail.
