A Mastic man who was driving with his 6-year-old son and crashed into oncoming traffic was charged Monday with drunk driving.
Police say Wayne Swiggers, 49, was driving northwest on Moriches-Middle Island Road Sunday when he lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. According to police, Swiggers' truck hit a sedan head-on. Authorities say his son was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Authorities say Swiggers refused a breathalyzer test at the scene of the crash.
According to a felony complaint from the First District Court, an arresting officer said, " ... his eyes were bloodshot and watery, strong odor of alcoholic beverage, poor coordination, slurred speech and unsteady on his feet."
All injuries from the crash are considered non-life threatening. Swiggers was arraigned Monday morning. He has two prior DWI convictions. The case has now gone to Child Protective Services.
