A Suffolk County information technology supervisor was arrested for allegedly running an unauthorized cryptocurrency mining operation out of county offices.
Christopher Naples, of Mattituck, is accused costing the county thousands of dollars in electricity over the past seven months.
District Attorney Tim Sini says, “We will not allow County employees, who are already on the public’s payroll, to steal taxpayer money or illegally use government resources for their own gain.”
Naples is charged with public corruption, grand larceny, computer trespass and official misconduct.
Sini said several search warrants were executed. He said they found 46 cryptocurrency mining devices that were hidden in six rooms throughout the building.
Naples was arraigned today and released on his own recognizance.
He is due back in court on Sept. 16. If convicted of the top count, Naples faces a maximum sentence of five to 15 years.
