A retired sergeant with the NYPD Housing Bureau is accused of making false criminal accusations against several individuals he believed wronged him.
The Nassau County District Attorney?s Office says Robert Zafonte, of East Meadow, sent letters and made complaints against several people accusing them of child abuse, stealing money from a school district and other violations. He knew the accusations were false, prosecutors say.
Prosecutors say Zafonte sent 14 letters over a five-year period. In one case, he accused an East Meadow School District employee of several transgressions after his daughter failed to get a job with the district. The district attorney says all the allegations were investigated and proven false.
Zafonte is also an investigator with the Town of Hempstead attorney?s office and has been reassigned. He faces 28 felony charges, including filing a false instrument.
