Cuomo: Aid on the way for Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in East Rockaway
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that federal funds are coming to Nassau to repair the Sandy-damaged Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant.
Cuomo says at least $730 million in FEMA funds will go toward fixing the troubled East Rockaway plant.
The federal funding will help cover the costs of building of a dike to strengthen the facility against future storms, upgrade its electrical system and implement better odor control.
During Sandy, the plant was flooded and its pumping system was knocked offline, spilling raw sewage into the streets. It operated on generators for months after the storm.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers in the county Legislature had squabbled over how to pay for repairs. In November, lawmakers approved a plan to spend $455 million in bonds to fix the plant.
The plant serves more than 550,000 Nassau residents.
