About 40 fire departments from Nassau and another five from Suffolk are working to battle a large brush fire in Kings Point.

Authorities say the fire broke out just before 12 p.m. near Red Brook and Steamboat roads.

Fire authorities say that no homes are in danger at this time.

There is no word yet on what sparked the flames.

Officials say the fire is deep within the 100-acre preserve and very difficult to approach. They say the blaze looks to be confined to a 3-acre plot, and it may have been caused by the recent lack of rainfall.

"Because the fire is mostly underground, it's very difficult to assess," says Nassau County Fire Marshall Michael Uttaro. "It's very unstable ground. It could be somewhere from a foot deep to we've heard as much as 6-feet deep."

Officials say that at this point the fire doesn't look suspicious.
