Suffolk detectives say credit card skimmers can be had by the click of a computer mouse.
"EBay, Craigslist, anywhere you can find electronics, you can find card skimmers," says Detective Thomas Gabriele, of the Suffolk Police Identity Theft Unit.
A simple Google search by News 12 Long Island found a manufacturer selling skimmer kits for just $1,600. News 12 Long Island inquired with the manufacturer and was told the device would lift card numbers and PIN information and then send the information via text messages to any phone.
Purchasing the kit, however, could lead to an arrest for unlawfully possessing a skimmer device, says Gabriele.
Gabriele says his department investigates close to 3,000 skimmer thefts a year in Suffolk County.
