Police say an off-duty Suffolk County police officer was killed in a single-car crash in Selden early Monday.
According to police, Vincent Pelliccio was driving a 2021 Jeep northbound on Nicolls Road, near West Road, when his vehicle left the roadway and crashed in the median.
Pelliccio, 30, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Pelliccio, a 3rd Precinct officer, was a member of the department since December 2014.
He was honored in 2019 with a police valor award named for former President Theodore Roosevelt that recognizes officers who have overcome a disability or illness.
Pelliccio continued to serve on the force while he had testicular cancer.
"My family in the police department were there for me," Pelliccio said. "No matter how busy people's lives were, they always made time for me, and I'll be forever grateful."
The Jeep was impounded for a safety check.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
