COVID-19 cases hit record high across US; surge continues on Long Island

New daily COVID-19 cases have hit a record high with more than 136,000 new cases in just one day across the United States. Meanwhile, the surge of cases also continues on Long Island.
Long Island's positivity rate was 3.5% Monday after weeks of hovering around 1%.
The number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases was 558 Monday.
Officials are saying even with breakthroughs in vaccines and treatment, Long Islanders can't let their guard down and have to fight any pandemic fatigue especially as we head in to the holiday season.
Officials point to recent spikes on Long Island that are being linked to smaller gatherings for Halloween.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said their investigations have shown that parties followed the state guidelines with 50 people or less, but attendees felt more relaxed, and did not wear masks or social distance.
The CDC is recommending Thanksgiving be celebrated with just those in your household.
Long Islanders News 12 spoke with say they've been adjusting plans.
"Probably just going to stay home this year. My sister-in-law invited us there, but I'd rather stay home. My husband is a diabetic, so I just want to be careful," says Denise Calabrese.
Hospitals are preparing for any potential surges.
