A search warrant for the green 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche that belonged to Rex Heuermann, who was arrested for the murders of three Gilgo Beach victims, provides a rare look at what type of evidence police are pursuing in their investigation.
Team 12 Investigates obtained the search warrant for the car that was filed on July 14 in Chester County, South Carolina. The vehicle was seized from the property where the suspect’s brother, Craig Heuermann, lives. New York State Police brought the car back to the Suffolk County Crime Lab last week.
According to the warrant, police are searching for items that belong to some of the victims, like identification, Bibles and photos or recordings depicting the victims. Investigators are also looking for all types of electronics and digital storage such as DVDs, video cameras and cassette tapes.
Authorities are also looking to search hidden compartments, locked rooms, cabinets, and safes. All the items on the search warrant are listed as potential evidence regarding charges for murder, patronizing a person for prostitution and conspiracy.
Police also list a specific type of paper towels on the search warrant. They state they are looking for paper towels from the “Bounty Modern Print Collection.” They also believe they might find items used in the murders, including hunting blinds, restraints, belts, textile yarns, duct tape and burlap.
As News 12 has reported, four Gilgo Beach victims were discovered bound by belts or tape. Investigators said at least three victims were found wrapped in burlap.
Heuermann is facing murder charges for the deaths of three of the victims, but investigators are building evidence to potentially charge him with a fourth murder.
“They're going to continue an investigation,” said Michael Alcazar, retired NYPD detective and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “They're going to do their due diligence. They're not going to be satisfied until they're completely sure that they've identified all potential locations for all potential crime scenes.”
