A Ronkonkoma woman found after a fire tore through her home died of strangulation, Suffolk police said Wednesday.
Laura Giampino's body was discovered Monday morning in the first-floor apartment she rented at 256 Hawkins Ave. Police said the fire was arson, but 20-year-old Giampino was killed before it was set.
Karen Pesce, the victim's mother, said she's been concerned for her daughter's safety since her wedding five months ago.
"I refused to accept him because I feared for her life," Pesce said. "And now my fears have become a reality."
Giampino's husband, however, is not a suspect. Police said he began a 45-day sentence Friday for second-degree menacing.
Police said the victim, who was a recent Suffolk Community College graduate and an aspiring police officer, held a party the Sunday night and they are contacting her guests.
