Suffolk officials announced the largest seizure of heroin in the county?s history and more than a dozen arrests Thursday that are part of a large-scale drug ring.
Investigators say that they seized 3 kilos of heroin, stockpiles of weapons and ammunition and hundreds of thousand of dollars in cash. The arrests were made after a five-month investigation.
?The people we are dealing with are high level,? Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says. ?They are real bad guys.?
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, dozens of people are under arrest. They say that the heroin was packaged in Queens and taken to western Suffolk for distribution.
Officials say the kingpin of the alleged operation was Felix Cruz, of Brooklyn. According to investigators, every 10 days he'd drive to Suffolk County and deliver 10,000 packets of heroin to Gilberto Rivera aka Macho, of Oakdale. Authorities say Rivera would then distribute the drugs through runners who sold the drugs in communities like Commack, Smithtown and Bay Shore. Spota says the drugs were sold to young people and brought into high schools.
On Thursday, Spota announced the creation of a multi-agency heroin task force to focus on street-level suppliers and users.
