A 64-year-old Lindenhurst man is in the hospital recovering after police say he was attacked with a hammer while trying to help his neighbor out of an altercation. Police say 21-year-old Nick Magalhaes and his 26-year-old brother Frank went to confront a young man who had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend, who was a friend of the brothers. They allegedly broke into the Lindenhurst home Saturday carrying a knife and hammer and chased the man, who then ran to his neighbor?s house.
The neighbor, Ralph Delia, came out of his home and tried to break up the fight. He was attacked with the hammer, police say. Delia?s 16-year-old son Michael says he witnessed the attack.
?It was honestly the scariest thing I've ever seen,? Michael Delia says. ?Just to see your own father on the floor ? it broke my heart.?
Michael Delia says his father had to get staples in his head and part of his ear re-attached. The Magalhaes brothers were charged with burglary and assault and were arraigned Monday. They are due back in court Friday.
