Police say a dispute proceeded a crash at a Wyandanch gas station that ignited a fire early Friday morning.
It happened around 2 a.m. at the BP gas station on Straight Path by Jamaica Avenue. An SUV smashed into a gas pump, sparking a fire that spread to part of the gas station building.
The Wyandanch Fire Department quickly extinguished the flames.
The impact of the crash left the gas pump damaged, and the side of the gas station building was also damaged by the flames.
Police believe an altercation prompted the crash. Surveillance video from the scene shows at least five individuals having an angry confrontation. In the footage, the vehicle backs up, then accelerates forward rapidly and strikes the fuel pump, sparking an explosion.
Detectives say shell casings were found near the gas station, although it is not known if they are connected to the incident.
No injuries were reported.
The crash remains under investigation, police say.
