(10/02/06) SAG HARBOR ? A Sag Harbor man was arrested this weekend after police say he supplied alcohol to minors at his teenager?s house party, reopening the debate of underage drinking.
Some Long Island parents say it is better to have their children drink in their own houses. They say their high school children will drink alcohol at that age regardless, and it is safer to have adult supervision. Some teens believe the law, which allows people to purchase and consume alcohol at age 21, is hypocritical. They say the age restriction does not make sense because citizens can vote and be drafted at 18.
Other parents claim the law is in place for a reason. They say good and responsible decisions about drinking start at home. Regardless of whether a parent disagrees with the legal age restriction, some say it is still the law and they should not disregard it.
The man faces misdemeanor charges of serving alcohol to minors. The U.S. Senate considered a bill this year to make the act a felony, toughening the penalty substantially.
