At the Ice Cream Cottage in Mastic, John Pastore has been making ice cream from scratch for more than 20 years. "We're not a franchise, so we basically invent our own flavors," says Pastore. In Miller Place, McNulty's is rolling out summer flavors, such as peach and blueberry. On Monday's, bring your children for kids' night.

Across the county line you can travel back in time. Hildebrant's in Williston Park offers an old-fashioned egg cream or root beer float, while you sit at their ice cream counter.
