Consumer advocates have said that an e-mail that threatens a breach of personal privacy is a hoax.
Officials say an e-mail that tells the recipient that their cell phone number has been sold to telemarketers has been seen more and more around the Island. Consumer advocates assure that the e-mail is phony and numbers are not actually being given out.
Nassau County Commissioner of Consumer Affairs Roger Bogsted recommends deleting e-mails where the source is unknown and registering phone numbers with the national Do-Not-Call list.
