Construction has begun to turn an empty Blue Point lot into a park named after Billy Schettino, an 18-year-old who was fatally hit by a police car 10 years ago.

When Schettino was 8 years old, he drew up plans to build a skate park at the site and collected hundreds of signatures for a petition.

Years after his death, local officials were able to secure $1.4 million to make Schettino’s childhood idea a reality and honor his memory.
