Many Long Islanders are unhappy with the $120 billion Iraq war spending bill that does not include a withdrawal date.
The bill, which funds the war through September, passed the House by a vote of 280 to 142 Thursday afternoon. The Senate approved the bill, 80 to 14, later in the evening.
Democrats dropped their demand for a timeline for removing troops from Iraq after President George W. Bush repeated promises of another veto.
Plainview resident Ellie Haber said she's angry the left-of-center party backed down. "We've done enough. And we've put in too many troops and too many men are getting killed and we're not getting anything by," Haber said. "So just pack it up and leave."
In exchange for dropping the timeline, Bush agreed to institute benchmarks for the Iraqi government and increased spending on domestic and military issues.
Nonetheless, Bush said the immediate future would be difficult.
"We're going to expect heavy fighting in the weeks and months," Bush said. "We can expect more American and Iraqi casualties."
