The underpass on East 161st Street, supposed to be a convenient path for pedestrians, has become a source of residents? grievances.

People who live and work in the vicinity of the underpass say it?s structurally unstable and unsafe, especially at night when it?s completely dark.

The underpass, which stretches from Gerard to Sheridan avenues, was recently reopened after undergoing some renovations. However, residents say the underpass is often deserted and leaky. They say remnants from the construction still under way remain and make it dangerous for pedestrians.

Others say they?re not concerned for their safety, but wish the construction would move along more quickly.

Residents are calling for increased police presence in the underpass. A spokesperson for Skanska Construction says the company is working to complete the construction with minimal disruptions.
