A Long Island Rail Road commuter found a deceased newborn baby boy abandoned at the Hicksville train station Monday.
Nassau police say the man discovered the baby's body on a trash receptacle on platform B at about 9:30 a.m. According to Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials, the bag with the child was not there when the garbage cans were emptied around midnight. Police report the umbilical cord was still attached and there was no obvious cause of death. They say an autopsy will commence shortly to determine if the boy was stillborn or killed after birth.
The Nassau district attorney, police department and MTA police launched a joint investigation. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact the Nassau County Police Department at 516-573-7788 or the MTA Police Department at 212-878-1000.
