Voting is taking place Thursday on a proposal that would increase the school bus distance requirement for Commack students, possibly forcing some to walk in the future.
School district officials say they came up with the plan to cut costs. They say it would save the average household $83 per year. Some parents say the plan would make things more difficult for working families. Under the plan, any student who has to pass a four-lane road would automatically get bus service. Voting is being held at Commack Middle School and Commack High School from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
